C.H.A.N.G.E. Awards Scholarships

R9 S.B.H.C. is a board member of community drug taskforce C.H.A.N.G.E and is passionately invested in supporting our community and children battling opioid and other addictions.

The local committee known as C.H.A.N.G.E. or Community Healing Additions through Networking Guidance and Education awarded two scholarships for area high school seniors during a recognition dinner on May 19, 2017.

Capitan graduate George Berryhill and Ruidoso graduate Christina Fragoso will each receive a $500 scholarship when they attend college in the fall.

Berryhill was awarded the Zach Dawson Memorial Scholarship and Fragoso was awarded the CJ Gomez Memorial Scholarship. The scholarships are named after two young people tragically died of opioid overdoses in Ruidoso in September 2016. C.H.A.N.G.E. aims to create awareness and educate the public about drug abuse and to change the stigma associated with additions.

Berryhill plans on attending New Mexico State University and will be seeking a nursing degree. Fragoso plans on attending Abilene Christian University and will be seeking a medical degree.

Scholarship recipients must be a Lincoln County and attend school in one of Lincoln County’s school districts or attend ENMU Ruidoso Adult Basic Education Program and have completed or is in the process of completing a high school equivalency diploma. A 300-500 word essay about addictions or the opioid epidemic, school transcript, and either SAT or ACT test scores.

LCMC has contributed several thousand dollars the past decade to Lincoln County high school graduates seeking a post-secondary education in the healthcare industry.

“It is our hope that you can be a voice to other young people about the dangers and tragic consequences of drug and alcohol abuse,” said April Stirman, C.H.A.N.G.E. Scholarship Committee.

The C.H.A.N.G.E. Scholarship Committee begins work in the spring every year. Students interested in applying for future scholarships should contact April Stirman at (575) 630-7974 for an application and complete information including application deadlines.
